Seminar and Class Dances of the Republic of Georgia Taught by Dato Goderidze, with music by the Dancing Crane Ensemble SFMS and Capital Area IFD are proud to welcome the Dancing Crane Georgian Dance Theater to Harrisburg for a marvelous introduction to the music and dance of the Georgian Republic. Our instructor for the weekend is Vladimer "Dato" Goderidze, originally from Tbilisi and currently residing in New York. Like many of Georgia’s best dancers Dato began dancing at a very early age, joining Tbilisi's professional children’s ensemble at the age of seven. He soloed for many years with Georgia’s top ensembles, including the Georgian State (Sukhishvili) Dance Ensemble, the Georgian State Ensemble of Songs and Dances, the state orchestra of Georgia (Rero), as well as doing choreography for Tbilisi’s Metekhi Ensemble. He is currently the choreographer of the Dancing Crane Georgian Dance Theater, in Warwick, New York. |

SUNDAY,
April
1, 2001 Two Performances: 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. |
Performance Dances,
Songs
and Music of the Republic of Georgia Two full-length performances of the traditional dances, songs and instrumental music from the Republic of Georgia. The dances range from the exhuberant light-hearted dacnes from Adjaria in the south-west to the elegant and graceful dances of the Georgians in Ossetia in the north to the vibrant, powerful and exciting dances of the mountain regions of Mtiuleti, Kasbegi and Khevsureti. The songs are based on harmonies and modes from the remote past. Anyone who has heard Georgian songs has been impressed and moved with the haunting melodies and intricate 3-part harmonies of this ancient vocal music. It brings us a sense of being fully alive and somehow connected to the vast history of cultures through the ages. The music is performed on traditional instruments and propels us into the dances with the pulsating rhythms and lush melodies. |
