Georgian Theater and its Language

Georgian theater is an old and well-established art form that emerged along with European and Russian dramatic theater.  It is liberally spiced with music and dance and elements drawn from regional idiosyncrasies of the Georgian people.

The language is Georgian, yet the dynamics of our productions make them accessible and enjoyable for the non-Georgian speaking audience as well. We include an English language synopsis and we introduced English subtitles with our play “Sarke” that was performed in the Midtown International Theater Festival in July of 2011. These continue today.

Our Audience

While we continue to reach out to the general public, our primary audience is the Georgian population of New York City and nearby communities. This is a population that has mushroomed since the fall of the Soviet Union and in particular during the last 12 years.

There is a large concentration throughout Brooklyn, but also in Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, Westchester County and New Jersey. The larger Georgian community will travel to events in New York City where we have our events.

As a performance organization for the Georgians for the past 17 years, we have been part of the development of a sense of community. Georgians in general always feel a connection to their homeland, and there is a great appreciation and hunger for the Georgian performance arts. Unlike dances and music, theater is a form that is difficult to carry to a new country. Yet it fills a need in the cultural life of Georgians that cannot be replaced.
